About Me

Making pictures that are visually engaging is my objective. Using sensuous brush strokes and vivid harmonious colour I strive to create satisfying compositions. I paint on location, travelling to places that are stimulating for emotional or visual reasons. I belt into it; on occasion it goes well; I concentrate completely; become absorbed in the process and the painting flows.

Having always painted I decided to study fine art for a year in the New York Studio School (http://www.nyss.org/). It was a wonderful experience having like minded people around and a studio in the centre of town. The tutors were great, knowledgeable about painting and eager to share. Graham Nickson, Bill Jenson were available full time and guest tutors included John Newman and Sean Scully.

Returning to Ireland I was awarded a six month residency in the Tyrone Guthrie Centre and then settled in Kilkenny, a fine spot for landscape painting. I had a solo exhibition which went well and was then offered a dream job, to project manage the photography of the world’s finest masterpieces for the Google Art Project.  I took the job and travelled the great museums of the world documenting paintings in minute detail. See the job here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6775qfu1GME

The Morandi’s in the Vatican, the Cézanne’s and Matisses everywhere were for me the most beautiful paintings of the trip, while the Hermitage in St Petersburg and the Art Institute in Chicago were the most amazing museums.

I’m now a design lecturer in the University of Limerick and work as freelance photographer for the Google Art project as well as painting in Contact Studios Limerick.
